A. In the pursuit of discovering a sea route to Asia, Columbus discovered a sea route to America. During his exploration, he visited the islands of Cuba, Haiti and South Eastern Coast of North America.

A. Magellan’s voyage is considered as important because it proved that the earth is round and gave an idea about the distribution of land and water on its surface.

5. Write few sentences on Christopher Columbus’s discovery of ‘New World’.
A. 1. Christopher Columbus was an Italian navigator settled in Portugal.
2. He wanted to sail west across the Atlantic ocean to discover the route
to Asia but instead discovered America.
3. He sailed with three ships and landed in an island in the Bahamas and
called it the West Indies.
4. He also visited the other islands such as Cuba and Haiti.
5. His discovery of ‘New World’ helped the Western civilizations to spread to America.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO TEACHERS:

Refer page no. 167 , para – 2; This book gives wrong information. Chanakya or Kautilya was the Prime Minister of Chandragupta Maurya not Chandragupta Vikramaditya as stated in the book.

Chandragupta Maurya ( 321 – 297 ) was the founder of Mauryan Empire and grandfather of Asoka. He was helped by Chanakya who wrote “Arthasastra”.

Chandragupta Vikramaditya belongs to Gupta period ( 375 – 413 A.D. ). His court had Navratnas – Kalidasa etc. – but not Chanakya.

So delete the lines – from “ Kautilya popularly known as …………and people in different professions”. Ask children to strike off these sentences and in the last paragraph …… -

Megasthanese – visited Chandragupta Maurya’s court – not Chandragupta Vikramaditya’s court. Fahien visited Chandragupta Vikramaditya’s court.

So the sentence must read ….. The Chinese traveler Fahien visited Chandragupta’s court. He has given glowing……

4. What did Raja Raja Chola do to encourage local self government in his kingdom?
A. Raja Raja Chola was a powerful ruler of the Chola dynasty. For the benefit of his people, he formed local self government at the town and the village level. This form of government was called ‘Kudavolai.’ The smallest unit of administration in the local government was the village.
